Surfing as a family in Tahiti: our tips for a great session with the kids
Introducing your kids to surfing, bodyboarding or skimboarding on the black-sand beaches of the east coast: the right spot, the right gear and the right habits.

A family session in Tahiti means shouts of joy in the whitewater, kids proud of their first glide and parents who, more often than not, end up jumping in too. A few good habits are enough for everyone to keep a great memory.
The right spot: Ahonu and Orofara
Ahonu, in Mahina, is our go-to spot for families: a black sand beach with gentle waves, where even the youngest surfers can confidently learn to ride the waves. Orofara, our weekend headquarters, offers a relaxed atmosphere and waves suitable for beginners and those with more advanced skills. In both cases, the surfboard will be delivered to you in the parking lot.
The right gear: light and safe
- For the first waves standing up: a stable foam board that does not hurt
- For fun lying down in the whitewater: the bodyboard, delivered with fins
- To play at the water's edge: the skimboard, in a few centimetres of water
- Wax and leash are included, and we have a special kids' rate grid

The right habits
- Choose a morning session: less wind, fewer people.
- Stay in the whitewater until you feel comfortable.
- Always keep your leash attached to your ankle, knee, or arm, depending on your style of riding. Always wear a rash guard or UV-protective t-shirt. Protect your skin with sunscreen. Bring water and fruit to stay hydrated: the Tahitian sun is unforgiving.
- Short, fun sessions are better than one long, exhausting one.
- Des sessions courtes et joyeuses valent mieux qu'une longue session épuisante
Beginners: a lesson first
For children and adults who have never surfed before, we require a surf lesson before your first rental. The basics (position, safety, reading the waves) can be learned, and an introduction to the sport makes all the difference. After that, the rental allows you to practice freely, as a family, at everyone's own pace.
Ready for a family outing? Check the kids' grid in our rates, then write to us with the children's age and height: we will prepare the right gear.
