Surfing in Tahiti for the first time: where to start?
Dreaming of catching your first wave in Tahiti? Here are our tips to choose the right spot, the right board and the right moment, stress-free.

Tahiti is not only for the Teahupo'o pros! The east coast, between Mahina and Papenoo, offers black-sand beach breaks that are perfect for learning: mellow waves, plenty of room and a laid-back vibe.
Choosing your spot
For a first time, head to Ahonu: a black-sand beach with gentle waves, perfect for families. Once you feel confident, Orofara and La Baie offer more varied peaks. Always check the Today's conditions section before you go.
Choosing your board
- Beginner: a foam board, stable and safe
- Mellow gliding: a Malibu or a longboard
- Already comfortable: a shortboard to go for it
The best surfer is the one having the most fun.
One last thing: complete beginners are asked to take one surf lesson before their first rental. It is safer, and you will enjoy your session a lot more. For the rest, we deliver the board at the spot's car park, wax and leash included!
